Artist's Statement
Cows are revered as sacred in Hinduism. Most states in India prohibit cow slaughter. However, these religious sentiments can only be found here. Beef is the third most popular meat in the world and because of the huge demand, cows are increasingly slaughtered for food. I have tried to depict the cultural difference between India and the world where India is very protective but this is not the case anywhere else. I have illustrated the cow using pencil colors and given the effect of the barn in the background using soft pastels and texture is created using water. I have used a bloody knife as a symbol of slaughter and burnt incense sticks as a symbol of worship and I have juxtaposed the two to show the dual attitude of the cultures.
